Dir. David Yates; starring Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint, Tom Felton, Michael Gambon, Jim Broadbent, Helena Bonham Carter, Alan Rickman

David Yates again takes the director’s chair for the sixth installment of the Harry Potter series. As Harry returns to Hogwart’s school of wizardry for another year of teenager angst and dark magic. Director Yates has the difficult task of adapting J.K. Rowling’s overlong and exposition-heavy novel. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince always felt like a prelude to something else in its literal form, as if Rowling knew how she wanted to end her saga but was unwilling to start that conclusion with her sixth book. The film is much the same. It’s a solid effort with some wonderful moments and fantastic production design, score, and special-effects, but Yates with writer Steve Kloves, can’t overcome the novel’s inadequacies. For a novel that is based far too much in flashback and back-story, the Half Blood Prince as a movie, feels a little disjointed, rushed in places and overcooked in others. Yates goes to the ever-blossoming talent of Rupert Grint’s comic sidekick, or Emma Watson’s teenage lust and broken heart to create some character-driven forward momentum, but it detracts from the underlying battle between good and evil. A battle that Rowling unfortunately presents in the book as a series of dream-induced flashbacks that, had Yates featured in their entirety, have made for a very long (even longer than its current two hours forty) film.

Essentially, The Half Blood Prince as a book and a film, is an introduction to a grander concluding story. As such, it never distances itself from a sense of the episodic. It also doesn’t work as well as the other films in the series as a stand alone story. It expects that you already know what has happened previously, beginning as it does, only hours after the Order of the Phoenix ended. New viewers therefore will feel immediately alienated, and the lack of a consistent plot which doesn’t end satisfactorily, will leave newcomers scratching their heads. Die hard fans of the books will complain Yates left out too much exposition, while fans primarily of the movies (of which I count myself) will begrudge a missed opportunity to make a film that distanced itself from a book that was always going to be troublesome to adapt.

However, you’ve got to give Yates and Kloves credit as the film starts rather well. Through a hazy, over-exposed frame we see a bruised and bloody Harry Potter under the microscope of newspaper men’s flashing camera lenses. The media is beginning to take note of this young magician’s ability after his latest battle with Voldermort left Harry’s godfather Sirius Black dead. Meanwhile, Voldermort’s henchmen, the Deatheaters, are on the rampage. In a sequence that will be shown in 3-D in selected IMAX cinemas, the Deatheaters crash through a grey English sky and fly imperiously through London streets before causing havoc for a bunch of tourists on the Millennium Bridge. It’s a terrific sequence that features a grand score from Nicholas Hooper that fills the soundstage with succulent bombast. Couple this with refined special-effects that seamlessly mix the panoramic views of London with the swashbuckling flying menaces and you have an opening to cherish.

But the early action is a little misleading. After Harry (Daniel Radcliffe), Ron (Rupert Grint), and Hermione (Emma Watson) follow Draco Malfoy (Tom Felton) into Borgin and Burkes magic supplies shop, where Yates sets up Draco’s mysterious work for Voldermort the film moves down a gear or two. As the teenagers board the train to Hogwarts, the film begins to concern itself more with romantic sub-plots than Draco’s more interesting late-night excursions to a strange old closet that appears to make things disappear and reappear on his command. Infuriatingly, too much time is spent watching Ron and Hermione in will-they-won’t-they fall in love moments, while Ron tries to avert the obsessive attentions of Lavender Brown. Admittedly, Rupert Grint has really grown into the part of Ron, and makes a lovely comic antidote to the more dark aspirations of Harry. One of the film’s most amusing sequences sees Ron under an enchantment that makes him fall madly, and compulsively, in love with Romilda Vane. Hence Jim Broadbent’s Professor Horace Slughorn being mollycoddled by an overzealous, hormone-ravaged Ron Weasley as the aging Professor quickly tries to make a potion to cure him.

This is going on while Harry and Ron’s sister Ginny are locked in their own battle of the hormones. When they eventually kiss in a scene that is both touching and endearing, ultimately its only achievement is to distant the story further from the dark drama that is ensuing. You wonder how Alfonso Cuaron (director of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban) or Mike Newell (director of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire), who both found an agreeable artistic knack with the darkest aspect of their respective stories, would have approached the Half-Blood Prince. The aforementioned directors had better source material to work with but Yates seems overly content to play for laughs, only exposing exposition when he absolutely has to. By the time Harry and Dumbledore set off on a mission to destroy Voldermort, the would-be adventure appears out of nowhere and plays in much the same episodic nature as the rest of the film. Anyone new to the franchise would find it rather difficult to feel any sense of dread or foreboding for Harry and Dumbledore’s impending battle since the antagonist is presented throughout the film as a mere distraction. Voldermort, or his childhood persona Tom Riddle, is the man we are constantly told for who you do not speak his name. It seems the film took that too literally.

And that’s where Yates should have distanced the film from the source material. The book is essentially as much about Voldermort as it is about Harry Potter. Yet, Voldermort’s part in the film is limited. Indeed, Ralph Fiennes who plays Voldermort as an adult in previous instalments, isn’t seen at all. Likewise, the book’s most appealing real-time sequence is Harry and Dumbledore’s adventure together. This should have taken precedence and been given a bigger part to play in the movie. And yet, when the book gets it right, Yates gets it wrong. During one of the book’s final scenes Harry is frozen under his invisibility cloak and cannot help a friend in mortal danger. In the film, Yates has Harry simply stand and watch on Dumbledore’s orders. This seriously detracts from the scene, making what could have been a wonderfully dramatic and tension-filled finale into an ending that goes out with a whimper.

However, one thing that gets better with every Harry Potter film are the performances of the three leads. Emma Watson doesn’t have a great deal to do but the youthful ego of her Hermione Granger is confidently underplayed. Daniel Radcliffe will forever be the face of Harry Potter and here he finds little trouble moving between light-hearted comedy and dark-rooted drama. Rupert Grint, however, is definitely the stand out of the three, as he has really got to grips with the comedic side of his character. Michael Gambon is reliably on-form as Professor Dumbledore, Jim Broadbent enters the franchise with an assured performance as Slughorn, while Alan Rickman and Robbie Coltrane, although shamefully underused, are terrific in their roles. Helena Bonham Carter also stands out for her sadistic Bellatrix Lestrange, while Tom Felton as Draco excels as the chief baddie of the piece. He’s like a young Ernst Stavro Blofeld, learning his trade to conquer the world.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is probably the weakest instalment in the series. It very much relies on your knowledge of what has gone before, and fails to move the story forward, seeming more like a prelude to what is to come. The performances are fine, indeed, Tom Felton and Rupert Grint have never been as good, but the plot leaves a lot to be desired. You’ll wait a very long time for the action to get going and when it does it’s a bit of a letdown. However, the production design is in keeping with the quality of the rest of the series with some lavish locations, beautifully photographed townships and cityscapes (the London underground even looks fantastic), and Hogwarts is its magical best. Nicholas Hooper’s score is suitably grandiose, and the special-effects team of Tom Burke (Visual Effects Supervisor), Nick Dudman (creature and make-up effects), and John Richardson (special-effects supervisor) are worth mentioning for almost perfect creation of Rowling’s fictional world.

The sixth Harry Potter film isn’t without its highlights and there are a few surprises along the way but it doesn’t live up to the high standards set by Cuaron’s Prisoner of Azkaban or Newell’s Goblet of Fire. Ultimately, the Half-Blood Prince simply sets up the adventure to come, and instead of satisfying fans who’ve waited a long time for the sixth film to appear, it’ll leave them unfulfilled, their anticipation only heightened for film number seven.

The seventh Harry Potter book is perhaps the most eagerly anticipated Harry Potter book of them all because—gasp!—it will reportedly be the last book in the immensely popular Harry Potter book series. There are a myriad of rumors floating about the seventh Harry Potter book. Recently, JK Rowling, the hugely successful creator of the Harry Potter books, announced the title for the seventh and final installment of the Harry Potter series: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. When the title was released, a flurry of rumors was also released. The title sounded a little spooky to some readers, and very intriguing to others.

Now that Harry fans everywhere know what the title of the last Harry Potter will be, it has opened up a Pandora ’s Box of rumors. Will Harry die in the final installment? Will he finally face the dark Lord Voldemort? What will happen to all of the characters? Here is a brief overview of the latest rumors about the seventh Harry Potter book. JK Rowling has mentioned in previous interviews that the final chapter of the Harry Potter series has been written for quite some time. Many fans now wonder what that ending has in store for them.

One of the biggest rumors regarding the seventh Harry Potter is that Harry will die in the final installment. Fans have analyzed all previous JK Rowling interviews for clues about what she plans to do in the final book. Various interpretations abound. Some fans believe that Rowling has hinted that Harry will indeed be offed in the seventh book. This is because of comments made by Rowling in which she talks about the temptation to off a main character so that sequels cannot be written years later by a different author. However, in other interviews, Rowling has stated that she does not feel tempted to kill Harry off because she cares about him dearly and had always planned to take him all the way to the seventh book. Most fans believe that Harry will survive in the seventh book, but the death of Dumbledore in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince has caused some fans to think that it is a distinct possibility.

Another of the major rumors about the seventh and final Harry Potter book is that Dumbledore will return in an important way. This has caused some readers to speculate about whether Dumbledore truly did die in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Did he really die, or was it some kind of illusion? Some readers believe that Dumbledore will return in some kind of ghost or phantom form. Another of the major rumors circulating around the latest Harry Potter book is the possibility that Severus Snape, the snarling mean professor, will actually turn out to be a good character. It is also rumored that Petunia Dursley, Harry’s mean aunt, will play a very crucial role in the final installment.

Another of the major rumors swirling around the final installment of the Harry Potter book series has to do with the release date of the last volume. It is rumored that Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows will be officially released on July 7, 2007. That means the date is 07/07/07. Many fans agree that this would be a very clever and appropriate way to roll-out the final Harry Potter book. There is no doubt that there will be lines around the block on whatever the release date turns out to be. If past sales have been any indication, there is no doubt that Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows will be the most successful Harry Potter book ever.Â

This first book of the series is the first that charmed publishers and readers, and which first introduced us to the main characters in the series: Harry Potter (of course), his best friend Ron Weasley (of the large and humble Weasley clan), and the highly intelligent Hermione Granger. This is the first book in a series of seven planned volumes.

Bloomsbury publishers in London first published Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone on June 26, 1997. The film was eventually made into a successful film of the same name, and it still stands as the most popular of the series’ books. At present date, it appears that Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone has sold an estimated 17 million copies in the United States, and as much as 70 million copies worldwide. Here is a brief summary of the basic plot of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.

The beginnings of the Harry Potter story opens with the wizards Albus Dumbledore and Minerva McGonagall meeting at a certain address-Number Four, Privet Drive, Little Winging, a suburb of Surrey. They have met there to discuss recent events that have occurred in the wizarding universe. It appears that Lord Voldemort, who has a reputation as one of the most fearsome and powerful of all the dark wizards in recent history, has been finally defeated. Sadly, two wizards have died as a result of this bearing. The two final victims were James and Lily Potter, who are the parents of young Harry. Harry is an infant when his parents die at the hands of Lord Voldemort, and he has somehow survived this legendary encounter, save for a lightning-shaped scar on his forehead. For this, young Harry becomes a legend in the world of wizards.

Dumbledore wants young Harry to be raised far from the attention and scrutiny that this event has caused, so he is left to be cared for by his only living relatives, his Aunt Petunia Dursley and her family, which includes bumbling husband Vernon and Harry’s spoiled cousin Dudley. The Dursley’s do not care for the magical world, and they keep Harry’s heritage hid from him. However, not long from Harry’s eleventh birthdays, owls begin to deliver letters to the Dursley household that are addressed for Harry which are withheld from him by the Dursley’s. Finally, Hagrid the Hogwarts gamekeeper delivers the letters to Harry. The letters are Harry’s official invitation to attend the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Hagrid introduces Harry to the magical world. Finally, after learning much about his secret magic past, Harry makes his way off to Hogwarts. On the way he meets Ron Weasley, who will become his best friend. He also meets Hermione Granger, who appears to be an annoying know-it-all, but who will become one of his closest friends.

Once at Hogwarts, the new students are sorted into one of four houses. Harry and his new friends are chosen for Gryffindor house. At Hogwarts, a three-headed dog named Fluffy guards a secret trapdoor. Harry, Ron, and Hermione speculate that it must protect the legendary philosopher’s stone, which is thought to produce eternal life. The three friends decide to save the stone from imminent theft, and they find that the seemingly innocent Professor Quirrell is trying to steal the stone. It appears that Lord Voldemort’s spirit has taken over Quirrell. Harry and his friends confront Quirrell and during the confrontation, Quirrell dies. Voldemort’s spirit flees the scene. Harry suffers minor injuries during the confrontation, and as he recovers, Dumbledore informs him that his mother died in trying to protect Harry. It appears that his mother’s pure protective love has made him immune from the evil spells of Voldemort. Dumbledore also tells Harry that the stone will be destroyed in order to prevent future threat.

In the last installment of the Harry Potter, the dark Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, it appears that our beloved Dumbledore died during a tragic battle scene. But did Dumbledore really die in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince? There is so much controversy swarming over this simple question that it becomes clear just how passionate Harry Potter fans are. Dumbledore, as the sage head of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, represented the wisdom and experience in the always changing world of magic. Dumbledore always gave Harry the best advice, and he always seemed to come to Harry’s rescue when he most needed help.

Many fans were shocked at the end of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince when Dumbledore plunged to his death. Many cried, and yet others refused to believe that such a thing could happen. But did it really happen? Did Dumbledore really die, or is it yet another trick that Harry Potter creator JK Rowling has up her sleeve? There are plenty of Harry Potter fans out there who refuse to believe that Dumbledore could really be gone forever. Despite Rowling’s warnings that an important character would be dying, the revelation still managed to catch fans by complete surprise. Those who refuse to believe the possibility that Dumbledore has really died have even created websites dedicated to their belief that Dumbledore is really alive. There is even a famous website called dumbledoreisnotdead.com.

Some fans debate whether Dumbledore is really dead or not. Some argue that there are important clues in that final pivotal scene that demonstrate the possibility that perhaps Dumbledore is not really dead, and that Snape is not really a death eater. It is a well known fact that JK Rowling frequently plants secret clues that is embedded in the prose. Many fans believe that Dumbledore’s death is actually a hint or clue that will make sense once the final installment of the Harry Potter series is finished and released. Other fans believe that Dumbledore will return in the seventh and final installment of the series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Even if he does not return in live form, many dedicated Harry Potter readers believe that there is a distinct possibility that Dumbledore will return as a ghost, phantom or spirit of some kind. Many readers hold out high hopes that Aldus Dumbledore will return in the final installment of the Harry Potter series in some form or other. Readers who feel a strong connection or fondness to Dumbledore will surely be disappointed if their hopes do not pan out in the end.

However, during a rare recent panel session in New York, JK Rowling, the writer of all the Harry Potter books, announced something that many Harry fans will not want to hear. She said unequivocally that Dumbledore is dead, and that there were no tricks in that pivotal scene. She apologized to fans who loved Dumbledore and who are still reeling from the shock of losing him in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Still, even with Rowling’s unequivocal words that prove that Dumbledore is indeed dead, many fans still refuse to lose hope that Dumbledore may return in some fashion.

After all, the Harry Potter books are basically fantasy novels, where the impossible can sometimes be achieved. Wouldn’t it be possible, some fans ask, to revive Dumbledore in some way or another? But fans will have to wait and tune in to see what happens in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the final installment in the vastly popular Harry Potter series created by JK Rowling. Whether Dumbledore returns or not, fans can all agree that he has been a powerful and inspiring source of wisdom and experience throughout the entire Harry Potter series.

The Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is one of the aspects of the Harry Potter books that make the series so appealing to many of us. Who hasn’t read one or more of the Harry Potter books without daydream about what it would be like to attend this magical place with Harry, Ron Weasley and Hermione? JK Rowling has created a magical school where Harry and his pals learn, grow, study and try to master all the charms and spells in their textbook, while solving mysteries and battling the dark forces of evil. It is certainly a lot of things for young adults to shoulder, but they do it mightily well. Rowling does done such a masterful job at imagining and describing this magical school, that one feels almost as if it really does exist out there in another dimension of our normal lives. Like a real school, one can speak of the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry as if it really existed because that is about how real it feels to many readers.

In the Harry Potter universe, the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is apparently the only known school of magic to exist in the United Kingdom. All children of Britain and Ireland who are known to possess magical qualities are qualified to enroll in the Hogwarts School as witches and wizards in training. The school can aptly be described as a secondary boarding school that is co-educational and that accepts children ages 11 to 18. The school is believed to accommodate roughly about 1000 students, although some critics have noted that there are too few people in Harry’s year for this number to be realistic. Of course, this is slight oversight that does not bother most readers of the book series.

It is not known exactly how the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is funded, but it does not appear that students must pay tuition. However, students are responsible for procuring many of their own school supplies. Professor McGonagall is responsible for sending out letters to all young children with magical abilities who will turn eleven years old by the last day of August. There is a magical quill at Hogwarts School that detects the birth of all the magical children in the area, and their names are scripted into a large parchment book. When it comes time, all the magical children who are of age will receive a letter informing them that they are eligible to enroll at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The letter also informs them that they should accept or decline the invitation by the last day of July. The letter also informs the prospective students that they should procure certain supplies if they will be attending Hogwarts. Supplies include spell books, a Hogwarts uniform, and other miscellaneous supplies that are available for purchase at the shops along Diagon Alley. Diagon Alley is a secret street that is located near Charing Cross in London. There is extensive description of the intriguing shops located at Diagon Alley. Those students who cannot afford to buy the necessary supplies are supplied with financial aid from the school. This is the case for Tom Riddle, a young orphan in the series.

All Hogwarts students are allowed to bring one pet with them to keep while at school. The pet can either be a cat, owl, or toad. Most students choose to keep owls as pets because they can deliver their mail back home, and retrieve messages and packages from the home front. The Hogwarts school year always begins on the first day of September.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is the third book in the mega-popular Harry Potter series that was created by JK Rowling. The book’s first printing was in July 8, 1999. The film version of the book was released on May 31, 2004 in the United Kingdom, and shortly after in the United States. The book is one of the most popular volumes of the series. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is distinguished from the other volumes in the series in that it is the only title in which the dark lord Voldemort does not appear.

At the beginning of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban opens with Harry spending his summer again at the Dursley’s. He celebrates his birthday alone there, although he does receive gifts and cards from his friends back at Hogwarts. He also receives a newspaper clipping from Ron Weasley that announces that his father has won a prize that has allowed the family to take a trip to Egypt. The newspaper is also filled with stories about Sirius Black, who is a known insane murderer and who has recently escaped from Azkaban prison. But despite this news, Harry is still more afraid of the visit from his Aunt Marge. When Aunt Marge’s insults Harry, he becomes so angry that he gathers his belongings and leaves. Outside on a dark street, he comes upon a large black dog. He stumbles and inadvertently sparks his wand. This summons the Knight Bus which takes him to Diagon Alley. Harry spends the rest of the summer at the Leaky Cauldron.

On the train back to school, Harry, Ron and Hermione spot creatures called dementors, which are guards of the Azkaban prison searching for Sirius Black. The dementors are installed to help protect Hogwarts until he is caught. Meanwhile, Hermione appears to be taking every class available, and Harry is frightened that the dog he saw earlier is an omen of death. Hagrid has trouble adjusting to life as a teacher, and one night the Gryffindor students find that they are locked out of their dormitories. Sirius Black is out to find Harry.

During a quidditch match against Hufflepuff, Harry faints at the end and falls from his broom. The dementors rush toward him, and then run away. Later, Harry, Hermione and Ron sneak into a pub and overhear a conversation about Sirius Black in which they discover that Black was one of Harry’s father’s best friends, as well as Harry’s godfather. Apparently, Black was also the Potter’s secret-keeper, but eventually betrayed them to Voldemort. Harry vows to get revenge against Black.

One of the most popular passages of this volume is when Harry Potter learns the famous patronus charm. Later, Harry, Ron, and Hermione find themselves in the shrieking shack. It is revealed that the new Professor Lupin sometimes turns into a werewolf, and that Harry’s dad as well as Sirius Black also turned into animals to help keep him in track. Thus, it is revealed that Black is not the awful character that Harry had thought he was. He is in fact his godfather, and offers to take care of Harry. But Black is captured by and Hermione must use her Time Turner to transport her and Harry back in time briefly. They are able to free Sirius. Later, when it is revealed that Lupin is a werewolf, he resigns, but before he leaves he gives Harry the Marauder Map that he made with Black and Harry’s map.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban surely have one of the most interesting and complex plots in the series. It is full of charms, secrets, and plot twists that keep the reader guessing at all times.

Harry Potter has become famous as the fastest-selling book in recent publishing history. It is reported that at one point Barnes and Noble was selling an average of 105 copies per second in the first few hours of the book’s release. The book was released on July 16, 2005, and it is the sixth volume in the Harry Potter series. The book made over 100 million dollars just in its first weekend in release, which is more than all the top movies combined that were also released that weekend.

Many readers and critics have noted that Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince has a much darker tone than some of the previous books in the series. The book’s setting opens barely two weeks after the end of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. In this volume, Rufus Scrimgeour is announced as the new minister for magic. This benefits the Weasley family as Arthur Weasley receives a promotion that helps to improve the family’s financial situation.

Back at Hogwarts, security measures are heightened because of increased death activity. Snape is finally promoted to defense against the dark arts teacher, and Harry and Dumbledore help convince Horace Slughorn to come out of retirement in order to become potions teacher. Harry and Ron sign up for Slughorn’s advanced potion classes, and Harry uses an old textbook that once belonged to the half blood prince. The prince left notes in the book that allow Harry to exceed in the course, even getting better grades than Hermione. Slughorn gives Harry a vial of good luck potion as a reward. Harry suspects that Draco may be a death eater, but Dumbledore does not seem concerned.

Ron begins to date Lavender Brown just as he and Hermione appear to be developing a romantic relationship. He even kisses Lavender in public to spite Hermione after he hears that she had kissed Viktor Krum in the past. Meanwhile, Hermione gets her own form of revenge by inviting Cormac McLaggen to accompany her to Slughorn’s Christmas party. Her plan to make Ron jealous backfires when Ron is accidentally poisoned, which causes their feud to end. Ron breaks up with Lavender. Harry also finds himself with romantic troubles. Many girls are drawn to him, but he cares only for Ginny Weasley. But he is afraid that starting a relationship with her may put his friendship with Ron under strain. However, Ron gives his approval after the victorious Quidditch match when Harry inadvertently kisses Ginny.

Dumbledore and Harry attempt to rescue a lost memory from Slughorn’s past. Dumbledore tells Harry that he believes Voldemort has split his soul into seven parts. They set off to find another of Voldemort’s horcruxes, which they believe is hidden in a secret cave. They retrieve the locket, but Dumbledore finds himself very weakened by the process. They find that the dark mark is hanging over Hogwarts. Draco Malfoy attempts to ambush them as they investigate. Draco announces that the death eaters have infiltrated Hogwarts. Snape kills Dumbledore by using the Avaa Kedavra move that causes Draco to fall to his death from the astronomy tower. Harry pursues Snape, who calls himself the half blood prince. When Harry takes the locket from Dumbledore’s body, he discovers that the locket is not real. There is a note inside with the initials R.A.B. The year at Hogwarts ends somberly with Dumbledore’s funeral. Professor McGonagall is appointed as the new headmistress. At the end of the novel, Harry decides that he must not return to Hogwarts the next year, but instead search the world for the horcruxes that he must find in order to destroy Voldemort. He ends his relationship with Ginny Weasley in order to protect her from Voldemort, and Hermione and Ron insist upon helping him find the horcruxes.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is the fifth book in the Harry Potter series that was created by JK Rowling. The book was first released on June 21, 2003 in the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada and the United States. It sold nearly seven million copies in the United Kingdom and the United States on that first release date. The film version of this volume is scheduled to be released on July 13, 2007.

When this title opens, Harry has just had a big fight with his aunt and uncle. He wanders around Little Whinging when he and his cousin Dudley are attacked by the dementors. Harry uses the Patronus Charm to ward off the dementors, but Dudley remains shaken badly from the encounter. One of their neighbors, Arabella Figg, comes to their aid. It is revealed that she is a squib, a person who is not magical but who is born into a magical family. Arabella Figg was asked by Dumbledore to watch over Harry when he is staying with the Dursley’s. When they get home, Harry finds that an owl has delivered a letter that says he has been expelled from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry for using magic outside of the school, and that he must appear before the Ministry of Magic for a special hearing. Members of the order of the Phoenix arrive to take Harry to their secret headquarters at the Black family home in London. Arthur Weasley accompanies Harry to the hearing but they are late because they were not told the correct time and location. Fortunately, Mrs. Figg arrives and testifies in Harry’s favor and he is cleared.

Back at Hogwarts there is a new instructor, Dolores Umbridge, who appears to be there to spy, and who has a prejudice against centaurs and so-called half-breeds. Ron is made the new keeper for the Gryffindor Quidditch team. Ginny replaces Harry as the seeker. Harry and Hermione learn that Hagrid has been sent on a special mission and that he is secretly keeping his half-brother Grawp hidden in the forest. Professor Umbridge demonstrates a strong disliking for Hagrid. Harry continues to have the same nightmares that have haunted him for a while. Harry has dreams about Arthur Weasley getting bitten by a snake, and then he learns that Arthur has indeed been bitten by venomous snakes. Harry worries that Voldemort is trying to take control of his body, but Dumbledore assures him that is not the case.

Hermione convinces Harry to form the D.A., the secret Dumblore Army, and she convinces Harry to teach students defense against the dark arts in secret. Umbridge discovers their secret meetings, but Dumbledore protects them. The Weasley twins also begin a student revolt when Umbridge appoints herself as headmistress, and none of the other teachers help her retain control. Shortly after, Harry receives visions that Sirius Black is being tortured. When Umbridge catches Harry trying to contact Black, Hermione distracts her by taking her to the forest where she insults a bunch of centaurs and she is carried away.

Harry and his friend’s use the school’s Thestrals to fly to the London Ministry of Magic, where they believe that Sirius is being trapped. However, it is not true, and when they arrive they find themselves ambushed by the death eaters. The students battle the death eaters and a glass sphere that Voldemort has been pursuing breaks. Sirius Black is killed during the battle by his cousin, a death eater. Dumbledore arrives and most of the death eaters are captured. Harry yells at Dumbledore for neglecting him for over a year, and Dumbledore reveals to him the lost prophecy: he must kill Voldemort, or be killed. Another year ends, and Harry returns to the Dursley’s house for yet another summer with them.
